Workshop: Rome, June 25 - July 9th
I taught a 2 week workshop in Rome as part of the fabulous lineup of Rome Art Workshops in the Campo de Fiori. The course was titled : Achieving Harmony: Plein Air, Portrait and Figure Painting.
The curriculum encompassed the underlying techniques of Plein Air Landscape, Portraiture and Figure Drawing and Painting. In addition to a good bit of outdoor landscape instruction, I taught drawing and painting from the live model, using the basic principles found in my book, The Figurative Artists Handbook, covering both portrait drawing and painting fairly extensively. In each class, I did live demos and provided individual critiques.
Workshops: Ireland Oct 20-21, 22-23
I'm teaching two, back-to-back workshops at the Schoolhouse for Art in Enniskery, County Wicklow Ireland, a coastal town is adjacent to Dublin.
Workshop 1: Figure Drawing Workshop (October 20th and 21) Students will first study how the figure is made up of simple geometric shapes and planes by working from a live model, in a studio setting. I will teach a system of figure drawing that includes rhythm, proportion, structure, and form in a manner that is easy to grasp for artists of all levels of experience.
Workshop 2: Portrait Painting Workshop (Oct 22 and 23rd) Students will learn how to paint a portrait from the live model, in a studio setting. First, the basic volumes and planes of the head will be considered and discussed, and then more detailed surface form. Students will work on a portrait, moving through 3 steps. Block-in the major planes in pencil, charcoal or directly, in oils.
Ongoing Classes: The Teaching Studios of Art
In 2009, I founded an art school in Oyster Bay, NY devoted to teaching traditional techniques to artists of all ages and skill levels. I own and run the school, but it's hardly just about me. In the 9+ years we have been open, I've hired over 30 part-time faculty to teach classes and workshops. Our faculty are trained professionals who have achieved a level of excellence in their own practice that qualifies them to teach others. Our classes are small, our facilities are excellent, and students receive much personal attention. Our clients are our community, and we take their needs seriously. This client-centered approach has garnered us much press attention. In 2016, we were nominated for the "Best of Long Island" in the art school category.. I teach there on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, every week, except for when I'm getting ready for an exhibition and when I'm traveling.
